Pentagon Metro station, Blue line closed temporarily
The Lane Ranger
Nov 06, 2007
Smoke causes delays on Blue and Yellow lines
The Pentagon Metro station has been closed since 4:45 p.m., according to Cathy Asato, Metro spokeswoman.
Blue and Yellow line riders can expect significant delays for this evening’s rush hour due to heavy smoke coming from the tracks at the Pentagon Metrorail station, according to a news release.
More from Metro:
Blue and Yellow line trains are sharing the same track from Pentagon City through Arlington Cemetery on the Blue Line, and from Pentagon City to L’Enfant Plaza Metrorail station on the Yellow Line. Free Metrobus shuttles are running between the affected stations, but passengers should remember that a Metrobus can carry only 50 passengers, compared with the more than 600 passengers that can ride on a six-car Metrorail train.
The smoke and fire incident at the Pentagon station was caused by an arcing insulator on the track. An insulator is a piece of protective covering that supports the electrified third rail that provides electricity to run the trains. Metro personnel and the Arlington County Fire Department responded to the scene and extinguished the fire.

The Lane Ranger
Nov 06, 2007
The plastic cards that let transit passengers pay for bus and Metro fares just got a little more accessible—that’s if you live in Falls Church, Annandale or Arlington.
Giant supermarkets agreed to sell SmarTrip cards at six locations in Northern Virginia.
The SmarTrip cards are accepted on many buses and on Metro in the region. In the future they’ll also be accepted on PRTC buses—OmniLink and OmniRide, Metro Direct and Cross County Connector.
Here are the store locations that will sell SmarTrip cards…
3450 Washington Boulevard, Arlington
2901-11 South Glebe Road, Arlington
7137 Columbia Pike, Annandale
6426 Springfield Plaza, Springfield
3115 Lee Highway, Arlington
3480 South Jefferson Street, Falls Church
Metro’s Cathy Asato announced last week that the SmarTrip cards would be sold at Giant customer service counters at 26 more Giant stores in D.C., Maryland and Virginia.
“We want to encourage our riders to use SmarTrip on Metrobus and Metrorail. It’s convenient and speeds up the boarding process on buses and movement of passengers through faregates in rail stations. By making SmarTrip cards more widely available through our partners at Giant, we hope to get the cards into the hands of more and more customers in the neighborhoods we serve,” said Metro General Manager John Catoe in a news release.
SmarTrip cards also can be purchased on www.MetroOpensDoors.com, at Metro sales offices, commuter stores and vending machines at Metrorail stations that have parking facilities.

Great news for commuters in Gainesville, Bristow
The Lane Ranger
Nov 02, 2007
This Monday will be a watershed moment for commuters who drive on Va. 28 in Bristow and U.S. 29 in Gainesville.
The Virginia Department of Transportation announced that the new four-lane bridge over Broad Run on Va. 28 will be open by Monday.
In Gainesville the agency makes another huge stride to relieving commuters woes at the Interstate 66/ U.S. 29 interchange: a widened eastbound ramp from Gainesville to eastbound I-66.
Plus, two new commuter lots are opening in Gainesville on Monday.
VA. 28 BRIDGE
“By Monday morning, they’ll have all the lanes open,” said Joan Morris, VDOT spokeswoman, in reference to the Va. 28 bridge between Hornbaker and Linton Hall roads.
There is room on the bridge for two more lanes when Va. 28 is further widened in the future.
U.S. 29 RAMP
The U.S. 29 interchange project at I-66 is well under way and tonight’s eastbound improvements should make driving to work easier on Monday, she said.
“It all opens up tonight,” she said on Friday morning. “This is a major milestone for this project.”
PARK AND RIDE NOW OPEN
A commuter lot at Gainesville United Methodist Church adds to the area’s popular, but limited commuter lot bank.
The Potomac and Rappahannock Transportation Commission will lease 75 parking spaces from the church, at 13710 Milestone Ct. The lot opens
These spaces are in addition to the new lot at Linton Hall Road and Limestone Drive that will replace the temporary commuter lot at the Virginia Gateway Center.
Now that the new permanent commuter parking lot is ready to open, PRTC will alter its Linton Hall Metro Direct commuter bus service effective November 5 to start at Limestone Drive. As a result of the routing change, bus stops along Linton Hall at Virginia Gateway Center, Waverly Mills, Rocky Run and Laurianne will no longer be served, according to PRTC’s spokeswoman, Christine Rodrigo.
